Here’s what the BBC sent me last week in response to my complaint. It took over 11 weeks for them to come up with this.
Dear Ms Moore
Thank you for contacting us regarding ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ broadcast on 19 December 2010. Please accept our apologies for the delay in replying. We know our correspondents appreciate a quick response and we are sorry you have had to wait on this occasion.
I understand you felt there wasn’t enough coverage of female sporting achievement during the programme, and believe it came second after coverage of male sporting success.
There were two segments in the programme dedicated to the sporting achievements of both male and female athletes. The piece titled ‘Girl Power’ praised their determination, power and stated they are the pride and joy of Britain. It was a celebration of female athletes and did not mean cause any offence.
Overall we do feel female sporting achievement was adequately represented but we appreciate you take a different view. Please be assured that your complaint will be added to our audience log, a daily report of audience feedback that’s circulated to many BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, channel controllers and other senior managers.
The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about future programming and content.
Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.
Needless to say I’ll be taking this further.
Almost identical to the response I got to a complaint I made about another matter. In fact, from “Please be assured ….” it IS identical. Did they give you a link to the survey on satisfaction?
The BBC are never, ever wrong.
Oh yes … i most certainly did respond to the questionnaire link they sent. And I was mad!
Just not good enough….sounds like you are being patted on the head like a good little girl. Keep poking them!
Have they actually bothered to read your original complaint? Seems to me that they have magnificently missed the point
Keep at it – every little bit that reduces the ‘oh look girlies are doing cute little sports things’ has to help
Thanks for keeping at it. You certainly deserve better than this substance-free drivel.
Nice blog, but are you checking the google ad placement content you´ve allowed to be published? Allowing ads for “dream wedding” dresses seems to tarnish your message a bit.
Marie – we haven’t allowed any ads or product placement on our site so what you are seeing must be linked to another page or site?! It’s certainly not anything that we have any control over whatsoever. And we have no advertising on our site at all.
Keep poking and prodding, eventually you might reach a real human being. Thank you for at least writing the letter!!
Well, it sounds to me like they need A LOT more poking. Maybe if more of us were to write in? Or have a petition.
